What is coaching?

From ICF (International Coach Federation):

Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.

Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership designed to help clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve their performances and enhance the quality of their lives.

Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach's job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has.

How does coaching work?

You, as the client, are the one who best knows your dreams and goals for improving your life. Do you want to succeed on the job, in school, in relationships or contemplate new paths to follow in improving your life in any way imaginable?  A coach's role is to help you identify and articulate this and discover for yourself means of achieving these goals.Together we design strategies for moving forward and collaboratively define action steps that can be taken. You will report your progress on a regular basis in session meetings with your coach. These may be in person (in the San Jose, CA area), by phone or using Skype from any location. Your coach is in your corner, cheering you on with your successes and brainstorming with you on how to push through in areas which are lagging.

What happens in a coaching session?

Coaching sessions generally last 40 minutes and are scheduled three per month. Prior to a session, the client receives via email a Coaching Call Prep Form to fill out. This reports what was/wasn't accomplished that week and what, if anything, got in the way of those achievements. Then at the prescribed time, the client meets with or calls the coach, and items on the form are discussed. The coach is trained to observe and ask probing, open ended questions that help the clients find their own answers to their own questions on how to proceed.

During this process, clients will often learn things about themselves that they hadn't realized before. The client might see what beliefs are the driving force behind undesirable behaviors, and decide whether those beliefs are really worth hanging on to. By the end of the session, the client will have designed several action steps to take before the next meeting.
