United Studios of Self Defense Karate Classes

Martial arts is a great opportunity for special needs kids for both general exercise and crosspatterning exercises which improve brain function. It also instills a sense of competence and self regulation.

Patrick Diez is a karate instructor who has worked with many special needs students and does an amazing job of adapting the moves and program as needed. He is skilled at giving the child a positive experience, correcting them without ever putting them down.

He has worked with ADHD, AS, and HFA kids. He is excellent with quirky behaviors. One of his star pupils has CP and had difficulty with walking and balance; he helped build up her core strength.

Patrick offers one free lesson to try it out and see if karate is a good fit with your child.

From an anonymous parent: "My ASD daughter has been in kenpo karate since she was in 5th grade. Now at age 22 she has finally gotten a black belt. At the beginning she had a lot of trouble remembering the names for the moves and she was a little squirrely. I think martial arts has made a huge difference. As well as self confidence, resilience and self awareness, it provides her only exercise, she feels very proud of her accomplishments, and now she has started helping teach little kids. This is awesome!! We have had to be very careful about teachers. Some said "she didn't want to learn". Our favorite teacher is Patrick Dietz at United Studios of Self Defense in Saratoga
