The San Mateo County Office of Education provides special education programs for students whose needs cannot be met solely within their local school district. Approximately 450 students, ages 0-22 are served. The majority of students are served on general school campuses. Programs are provided for students with intensive needs, such as severe multiple disabilities, hearing, visual, orthopedic, communication and/or emotional disabilities or with autism. Infant programs serve children birth to 3 years of age with orthopedic, hearing and/or visual disabilities. Services are also available for infants and toddlers with communicative and social skills delays under San Mateo Toddler Education Program and Services (STEPS).
Currently, services are provided to students through the following programs: Early Start Program for Infants and Toddlers, Early Childhood Education, Special Education Services (K-12) and Designated Instructional Services (DIS). DIS includes Adapted Physical Education, Assistive Technology, Audiology, Integrated Hearing Impaired and Integrated Vision Impaired, Orientation and Mobility, Inclusion, District Support and Vocational Educational Services.
