Library Resources for Persons with Disabilities

If you or someone you know needs assistance with gaining access to reading materials, one of the services below could help. 

Local Services:

Large Print Books & Magazines, Books-on-Tape and Books-on-CD
Available throughout the libraries or through Books Aloud, Inc.  Use the Library catalog to locate these types of materials available at Palo Alto libraries.
 
Library Home Connection
Library Home Connection is a service of the Palo Alto City Library that provides a visit and delivery of library materials to people who cannot get to the library because of an extended illness or long term disability.  If you are interested in this program, please call 650-329-2426.

A Sign Language Interpreter
An interpreter can be provided to assist anyone in use of library services with 72 hours notice. Contact City of Palo Alto's Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator, 650-329-2550 (voice).

Help With Handling Library Materials
Call the library branch you will be visiting to set up an appointment with someone who will meet you at the library and assist you with finding, reaching and carrying materials to your car. 

Electronic Resources:
ADA-compliant computing
Loaner laptops with large-key keyboards can be checked out at Mitchell Park, Rinconada and College Terrace libraries. Each laptop has Ease of Access software.

Described Video Recordings (DVS)
Videos that have spoken descriptions of the action read between lines of dialog, while the complete video plays.  Available at Mitchell Park library.  Call 650-329-2436 for information.

Accessible eBooks for the print-impaired
As a member of the Northern California Digital Library, the Palo Alto City Library, in partnership with Bookshare and OverDrive (our technology partner for eBooks) participates in LEAP - the Library eBook Accessibility Program. If you are a print disabled Northern California Digital Library patron, you may qualify for a free LEAP subscription at Bookshare. 

 If you are a qualifying US student, you are entitled to access the Bookshare.org catalog for free through the support of the U.S. Department of Education and OSEP.
