We are delighted to have Melanie Delacruz, a certificated and licensed speech-language pathologist, give a presentation on tips and strategies for working with young children with speech delays. Participants will learn to recognize signs/symptoms of language delays in young children, create opportunities for developing language and communication in everyday activities, and alternative methods of communication. She will also present the impact of speech and language delays on a child’s behavior and ways in which parents and professionals alike can intervene to ensure a child’s successful growth. This presentation will also include examples of materials, a “mini” sign-language lesson, and activities for brainstorming ideas.
Designed for First 5 Partners and other local professionals who work with the 0-5 population. Parents welcome! Certificates available upon request, indicating hours earned against the Infant-Family Early Childhood Mental Health Guidelines.
Melanie Delacruz’s extensive experience working with young children with speech and language disorders has led to her desire to share her knowledge with others. Melanie uses three languages in her treatments – English, Spanish, and sign language (ASL and SEE) and holds a bilingual certification from San Diego State University. She has assessed and treated young children with a variety of speech and language disorders secondary to diagnoses such as Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and many more. Currently, she works full-time between three settings--a deaf and hard-of-hearing program in Santa Clara County, as a contractor for an early intervention program, and seeing private clients as an out-of-network provider.
