The lack of mental health parity in health insurance coverage has been a form of discrimination that persons with mental disabilities have long experienced. Federal and state law requires insurance companies to provide mental health and substance abuse benefits equal to physical health benefits. This is especially critical at a time when the need for children’s services is so great.
Family Voices of California, in collaboration with Mental Health Advocacy Services, will host a webinar on mental health parity and treatment for children and youth in California. The presentation will:
• Inform attendees about federal and state mental health parity laws
• Offer skills and tools to appeal the denial of insurance coverage
Our webinar presenter is Nancy Shea, senior attorney at Mental Health Advocacy Services, a public interest law firm in Los Angeles. She is a graduate of UCLA Law School and is an expert on issues involving children’s mental health, the coordination of services for children who have serious emotional and developmental disabilities, and the education of kids in the foster care and probation system.
